Imaging Cluster for Archaeology and Cultural Heritage

The development of high-resolution digital imaging and visualization techniques for the documentation of archaeological material and works of art over the past decade has significantly contributed to a flourishing surge of novel applications and research in archaeology, cultural heritage and education. Yet, following a wave of new technologies that have introduced impressive new possibilities in the documentation, analysis and dissemination of archaeological research a need for the development of focused integrated imaging and visualization research has become a critical necessity. The proliferating development of imaging technologies must adjust to the needs of archaeological and cultural heritage research addressing specific problems, materials and contexts. Directly responding to this problem, The Cyprus Institute’s (CyI) Imaging Cluster for Archaeology and Cultural Heritage (ICACH) is developing innovative technologies and the related technical capacity to appropriately tackle the challenges presented in the study of archaeological materials and works of art in Cyprus and the broader region of the Eastern Mediterranean.

ICACH is a truly interdisciplinary collaborative effort engaging research and technical expertise from both the Science and Technology in Archaeology Research Center (STARC) and the Computation-based Science and Technology Research Center (CaSToRC) of the Cyprus Institute aiming at utilizing and developing innovative techniques and methods to contribute new knowledge in Cypriot and Eastern Mediterranean Archaeology and Cultural Heritage.
